Open Farm Sunday

Open Farm Sunday in the sunshine

Last Sunday we took part in the national Open Farm Sunday event where we opened our gates at Woodbank Community Food Hub to show the work that we do in trying to transform the local food system - it was an absolutely fantastic day, and we are so grateful to everyone for coming down and taking part in our activities.

Throughout the day we welcomed over 300 members of the community, and ran five tours of our site showing people what we grow at Woodbank and how we're working to build a market for local, organic, delicious fruit and veg. The tours were a great success, with lots of you sparking interesting discussions on the issues we face.

We had many stall holders, including our amazing team of community growers who baked cakes and lunch to raise money for our continued activities on site, and who ran their own community garden veg stall. We also had some of our wonderful FarmStarters, for whom this was their first major event, selling some of the produce they've spent the last few months helping to grow, and who talked to passers by about the programme that we run.

Our activities on the day ranged from treasure hunts for kids and families, to leaf printing in clay, to bug and bird box making. The amount of positive feedback we got for the whole day just shows how much people need green spaces in cities and how keen people are to learn about growing their own food.

All of our work at the Kindling Trust, from the courses we run in growing food on a commercial scale, to putting on events for our community, to providing veg for our sister organisation Veg Box People, is done to benefit the communities in which we base ourselves. Our aim is to radically transform the local food system in this magnificent city, to make healthy food accessible to everyone, and to continue to grow a new generation of organic farmers to feed the citizens of Greater Manchester. By organising events like these, we can show you directly how we're making positive change for our communities, and in return you can get a glimpse of how fantastic it is to get your hands in the soil and grow food!
