To tackle the ageing farming population and the scarcity of organic farms in the North West, Kindling is supporting a new generation to transition gradually to a new career in farming. First year participants (TestCroppers!) undergo an intensive training programme on a shared section of land, before taking on their own ¼ acre strip in the second year. TestCropper Stephanie Robson (pictured with fellow trainee Chris) brings us news from the field...
"So we’re well into Spring now, and there is plenty of work keeping us busy! Training sessions have become a little less formal and classroom-based, instead we are working outside much more, getting hands-on and prepping, planting, weeding and watering – all under the watchful eye of Alex who is always on hand for help, advice, teaching and guiding us through.
Though some things are still getting planted in modules and kept under cover, we are also now starting to plant out. The field was ploughed and cultivated, and we begin the endless battle against weeds - of which couch grass, I am fast realising, is the most frustrating and tedious with its extensive networks of tough roots and its ability to rapidly regenerate from even the tiniest piece.
The weather has been pretty good so far, if a bit cooler than we might have expected, and things are growing fairly well. Broad beans, Carrots, Parsnips, Peas, Parsley and Beetroot have all gone in, as well as transplanted onions. Inside we have various brassicas, more beetroot for planting out soon, squash, courgettes, cucumbers and tomatoes. So lots to keep us busy and plenty more to be sown over the coming weeks!"
