Sustainable Food Film

Filming has begun on a short ten-minute film introducing FeedingManchester's definition of sustainable food. The video aims to clearly and succinctly introduce the eight elements of our collective definition and showcase a number of pioneering projects in the city delivering food that is low-carbon, healthy, fair-trade and humane.

Over the next few weeks Kindling, (with the crucial help of our volunteer camera woman) are filming and interviewing half-a-dozen sustainable food projects from across Manchester, including Glebeland's City Growers (pictured), Unicorn Grocery, Fairfield Materials Management and Hulme Garden Centre.

Sustainable food takes into account environmental, health, social & economic concerns and consists of eight inter-related principles. Although few progressive food ventures meet all of the principles, our interviewees use the definition as underlying aspiration to drive awareness-raising and change within their organisations and the wider food system. The eight elements of sustainable food are:

  1. Local & seasonal.
  2. Organic & sustainable farming.
  3. Reducing foods of animal origin & maximise welfare standards.
  4. Excludes fish species identified as at risk.
  5. Fair-trade-certified products.
  6. Promote health and well being.
  7. Food democracy.
  8. Reduction of waste and packaging.

A rough version of the video will be ready for FeedingManchester #5 on the 20th October (2010), where delegates will be able to offer suggestions for improvement, with the final version being launched at Manchester City Council's Stakeholder conference on the 20th November 2010.
