Solar Work for Change

Ewen from LoveSolar

Exciting plans are afoot at Work for Change the co-op managed workspace where we're based. We had a visit from Ewen from Love Solar to help us to scope up the options for installing a Solar PV array on the roof. There is enough space to install at least 23kW of panels which would provide all the energy needs of the workspaces, (which includes not only offices but also artists areas, workshops and a cafe) as well as the daytime energy use of the sister co-op homes for change as well!

The next phase is to assess the various technological options not only in terms of the panels output and cost but also their embedded carbon (the energy they take to produce), get further quotes and then obviously to work out the finances. Work for Change has already signed up to the 1010 campaign to reduce carbon emissions by 10% this year, but it's fantastic that the co-op is so keen to push more ambitious measures forward.

The Homes for Change and Work for Change co-ops showcased radical options in terms of tenent management and community participation during Hulme's redevelopment and it's great to see them lead the way in tackling our contribution to climate change.
