On 21st August fourteen enthusiastic members of Manchester-based accountants Slade and Cooper joined us to work alongside FarmStart's new organic growers, in helping to increase sustainable food production for Greater Manchester.
The Land Army regularly hosts Team Challenge Days for businesses and organisations who are looking for a way to give something back to their local community.
The accountants had a busy day of planting out strawberry runners, maintaining a herb area, preparing new beds for sowing and planting and of course, some weeding! As is the case for all organic growers, time is at a premium for FarmStart's growers and the extra pairs of hands were a massive help at a time of year when there is so much to do. This was certainly the case with the final job of the day, shoring up the polytunnel to withstand strong winter winds, which involved the digging and barrowing of lots of soil – some jobs just need lots of pairs of hands!
Our Slade and Cooper volunteers were rewarded for their hard work with a wholesome organic lunch and as much tea, biscuits and cake as they could manage. And of course the knowledge that their hard work has made a real difference to FarmStart's fledgling organic growers.
