FeedingManchester.org.uk is a brand new website for Greater Manchester residents who love food and want to eat in a healthier, greener and fairer way. The website provides extensive information about buying, growing, cooking, eating and loving local fresh produce. It connects buyers with growers, customers with farmers, and cooks with ingredients. For sustainable urban foodies, we think this site will definitely become a favourite.
The site also allows food projects to connect and work more closely with one another, building on the work of the Feeding Manchester conferences which are held several times each year.
The website has been created to make it easier for us to: support local farmers and local food enterprises; buy the freshest, environmentally friendly, high welfare food; become involved in community food projects; and to encourage us to think about all the issues involved in the food we eat.
This interactive website allows:
- A householder looking for local organic food to search food retailers and be shown the nearest options with details and opening hours.
- Someone interested in volunteering to find community projects in their area, what they do, and what type of volunteers they are looking for.
- A play-scheme looking to source bulk fresh fruit and vegetables could search by product type and find growers or delivery schemes in their area.
With over 500 progressive food projects, businesses and allotment sites from across Greater Manchester, residents are bound to find the site helpful and informative.
Chris Walsh, of Manchester's Kindling Trust, said:
"We all want to be greener and healthier, but we are busy with so many other things. FeedingManchester.org.uk offers Greater Manchester residents a one stop shop with a wealth of information. From where to eat out or shop for sustainable food, to tips on growing your own veg, to all the amazing local food projects you could become involved with”.
Debbie Clarke of Unicorn Grocery in South Manchester added:
"Our local farmers have a hard time of it competing against imports and the huge buying power supermarkets wield - and often the weather doesn't help! So show you care about our local farmers and the environment through the food you eat – FeedingManchester.org.uk will make it easy”.
The site has been developed by the Kindling Trust, but is owned and managed by the network of food projects it represents. If you’re involved in a sustainable food project or enterprise and aren’t on the site yet – do it now! Get your details listed, share ideas on the forum, and become part of the growing movement that is Feeding Manchester.
The FeedingManchester.org.uk website has been funded by the Big Lottery’s Making Local Food Work programme (www.makinglocalfoodwork.co.uk) and Manchester’s Food Futures (www.foodfutures.info)
