Food sovereignty workshop and Symphony of the Soil film screening

Food sovereignty workshop and film

Lots of interesting events happening in and around Manchester at the moment.

Building up to the Food Sovereignty gathering in Hebden Bridge (23-26 October), there is a workshop and film screening on Friday 16 October in the Yard Theatre at Old Birley Street.

From 4.30 until 6.30pm there’s a fascinating workshop called Food Journey.  Run by Community Centred Knowledge this will be a multi-sensory, immersive experience, exploring the colonial history of our foodways. Participating in this journey will help you to understand how the unique, historical trade and aid routes of Britain link it to its present day impact on culture tastes, health, community, economics and oppressions. The workshop will ask “do you define your experience with food in the world or has the world defined it for you?” To start the session off Helen from Kindling has been asked to give a short presentation about our work to create a more sustainable and fairer food system in Greater Manchester - a local example of what food sovereignty can mean in practice.

The workshop is followed at 7pm by a film screening of Symphony of the Soil introduced by Film maker Deborah Koons Garcia. Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. By understanding the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants and animals, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource. The film also examines our human relationship with soil, the use and misuse of soil in agriculture, deforestation and development, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in ameliorating the most challenging environmental issues of our time. Filmed on four continents, featuring esteemed scientists and working farmers and ranchers, Symphony of the Soil is an intriguing presentation that highlights possibilities of healthy soil creating healthy plants creating healthy humans living on a healthy planet.
