Our weekly community gardening sessions are going from strength to strength and, despite the long wait for the arrival of Spring, the community growers are doing an amazing job at getting the space ready for the flurry of sowing and planting that lies just around the corner. Rita and Janice have become friends since meeting during the community gardening sessions.
“I first came across the site when I attended the bird walk. I spoke to Ian who explained more about the veg growing and I tentatively popped in. Flowers are more my thing but I was intrigued to have a go at vegetable growing.
Being at the Woodbank Hub is like being in the countryside. Anyone could benefit from getting involved really. When you’re there, you’re not bothered about the mortgage or work. It takes you out of yourself, everybody needs to get away from the day to day.” Rita
“We were on site already growing veg, it’s great to be part of the whole site getting back to life. It’s really good to work with other people, meeting people who you wouldn’t usually.
When you’re a professional grower you have to do what buyers want. But we can experiment more and try different varieties. We’re going to try to grow purple tomatillos which are used for mexican salsa and yard long beans, (that are actually a yard long!) in the polytunnel space.
