Fungus ID Walk at Kindling Farm

In this guided walk around the farm, you will learn to identify fungi in the wild and understand its role in nature. Tom Ferguson of the Northwest Fungus group will be on-hand to help us identify the fungus we discover at the farm and answer any questions you might have. 

Please note that in line with the sustainable ethos of both organisations, we will not be foraging mushrooms and will briefly chat about sustainable foraging on the day.

For many years, Tom led fungal walks for the Ranger services in St Helens and Warrington raising awareness and inspiring enthusiasm for this fascinating subject. In more recent times he has joined the Northwest Fungus Group, who have been to promoting an interest in fungi across the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside, and the vice-counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire (part of Clwyd) since 1994. 

The group organises an extensive programme of forays, workshops and related events. They maintain a comprehensive database of fungi distribution across the North-West and provide advice on a range of fungi related enquiries including identification, recording, microscopy, books & literature, conservation and much more!

This activity is suitable for children aged 7+ however, please be mindful that it does involve walking across uneven ground for over an hour and being outdoors in all weathers so it might not suit everyone! As a working farm, the fields are not suitable for prams or pushchairs. 

It’s a good idea to wear sturdy footwear - walking boots or wellies are ideal. Even on a sunny day, the site can feel chilly so we’d advise wearing a couple of layers. And of course, we never can trust the weather so always bring waterproofs.

The farm is about to undergo refurbishment so unfortunately it is not wheelchair accessible at the moment. We have limited facilities with one indoor toilet which is up a set of stairs. As a working farm, the ground can be uneven in places making activities in the fields difficult for those with limited mobility.
