Visit us at Kindling Farm to map moth biodiversity especially for Moth Week 2026!

Training level: Beginner
Event details:

Here at Kindling Farm, we monitor all kinds of wildlife including moths. This is part of our work towards becoming a more wildlife friendly farm. For Moth Week 2026, you’re invited to our monthly moth survey!

We’ll set the light trap the night before and open it early the next morning before the sun gets too strong (read more about how our humane practices below). We’ll be joined by local experts who will help us to ID different species and show you how to record them on a national database.

This event is suitable for anyone with an interest in wildlife, including children. However, please be mindful that we have to be quiet and patient while opening up the moth trap so it might not be suitable for everyone.

Why not make a day of it and stay for Big Butterfly Day too. Click here to book for the morning slot. Alternatively, book for the afternoon here.

You must register to come to this event as facilities and parking are limited. Please make sure that you register everyone who will be coming along on the day - thank you!

The farm is about to undergo refurbishment so unfortunately it is not wheelchair accessible at the moment. We have limited facilities with one indoor toilet which is up a set of stairs.

We don’t have a cafe onsite but refreshments will be available.

As a working farm, the ground can be uneven in places making it difficult for those with limited mobility. Activities in the fields are not suitable for prams or pushchairs. If you have any questions about access, please contact: hayley@kindling.org.uk

About our moth trap

To help us monitor species of moths at the farm, we use a light trap. This involves placing crumpled egg cartons and a bright, UV-rich light in a box. The light attracts the moths and the cartons provide a dark, quiet hiding spot where the moths can rest safely until morning. We are mindful to open our trap up early the next morning before the sun gets too strong, causing the moths inside to overheat. It's also a good idea to release them into thick foliage providing safe cover from predators.
