A series of conversations with authors writing about nature, food and our impact on the planet.
Reading the Wild is a series of conversations with authors writing about nature, food and our impact on the planet. Next up, we’re joined by Hugh Warwick, author of A Prickly Affair, The Beauty in the Beast, Linescapes and Hedgehog. Hugh joins us at Kindling Farm to discuss his love for our prickly friends and what we can do to help them thrive in nature. He will read extracts of his work and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask your questions too!
This event is suitable for all ages. However, please be mindful that it does involve sitting still for 2 hours and listening to people talk so might not be suitable for everyone.
This isn’t a book club so there is no pressure to read the book in advance! But we certainly hope that our conversations will inspire you to read Hugh's work afterwards! Visit Hugh's website to learn more about purchasing his work.
Please make sure that you register to come to this event as spaces and facilities are limited.
About the Author
Hugh is an ecologist and writer with a particular fondness for hedgehogs. The first of three books about hedgehogs is, A Prickly Affair which has been awarded accolades from Jeanette Winterson and Ann Widdecombe on the cover. His second hedgehog book, Hedgehog is a monograph on the iconography of the hedgehog featuring beautiful illustrations. Most recently, Hugh wrote The Hedgehog Book which looks at the hedgehog from both the scientific and the less scientific points of view.
He describes his book, the Beauty in the Beast as ‘more fun than is reasonable’ and was written as he travelled the country looking for people a bit like him. In May 2017 Linescapes was published, it is a 'Remapping and Reconnecting Britain's Fragmented Wildlife.'
In addition to writing, Hugh also does a lot of public speaking (from primary schools to postgraduate research groups via the WI and Wildlife Trusts). He runs day-long courses on hedgehog conservation and also lectures in creative writing. He is the spokesperson for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
