In early May, just as our urban horticulture hub at Woodbank Park was springing back into life, it became home to an innovative new way of linking local food with health and wellbeing. Working in partnership with Alvanley Family Practice and Starting Point Community Learning Partnership, we are excited to be trialling ‘More than Medicine' (now Grow, Cook & Eat) - a model of social prescribing that combines access to local organic veg with cookery, socialising and food growing.
Towards the end of July, Team Kindling traded in our wellies and wheel barrows for banners and placards, taking to the streets of Blackpool united with ‘Farmers Against Fracking’ in Lancashire. As part of a month of protest with Reclaim the Power at the Cuadrilla drilling site in Blackpool, we proudly stood with food growers and environmental activists from around the UK to support those resisting the first UK attempt to extract fracked gas on a commercial scale.
Want to be a commercial organic grower? - We're recruiting now for our Autumn 2017 commercial growers course!
We are serious about getting more people into commercial food growing, and we are looking to support people who are serious about doing it too! Each autumn we run a 4-day Commercial Organic Horticulture Course - offering people an amazing training opportunity to learn how to set up an organic food growing business from the growers themselves.
Our FarmStart programme is about to reach a milestone (and undergo some changes) as we complete our first five years at Abbey Leys Farm in Cheshire.
We established the UK’s first organic incubator site based on a tried and tested model from North America, providing a five year programme for FarmStarters to learn about commercial food growing and build a business, before moving onto their own site.
A date for your diaries: It’s that time of year for the Kindling Trust’s Countryside Walk, where you can visit our FarmStart Cheshire site en-route. The walk will begin promptly at 11am on Sunday 6th August, at Abbey Leys Organic Farm (near Lymm). Happily, it also coincides with Abbey Leys monthly Farmers Market (10am-1pm) - so do arrive early for a browse! There is plenty of car parking at the farm, plus toilets and a farm shop.
A People's Food Policy - England's first people-led food & farming plan - is launched! And Kindling is just one of many UK organisations who have contributed ideas, experiences and insights into this far reaching plan.
The plan contains a vision is of a food system where everybody, regardless of income, status or background, has secure access to enough good food at all times, without compromising on the wellbeing of people, the health of the environment and the ability of future generations to provide for themselves.
Team Kindling will be heading to Blackpool on Friday 21st July for Farmers Against Fracking, "a day of family-friendly action for anyone who grows or eats food".
